Licensing schemes ‘not best way to improve standards’

Licensing schemes are probably not the best tool to drive up standards in the private rented sector, particularly during difficult financial times, the letting agents’ professional body has told a number of councils looking to introduce new schemes.

It has submitted responses to licensing proposals from Manchester, Middlesborough, Merton, Brent, and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets  outlining its concerns.

It has also emphasised the importance of offering discounts for members of organisations such as Propertymark that aspire to high standards.

‘Engagement with local authorities online or in-person consultation events regarding licensing schemes will be paramount for Propertymark. We will use the opportunity to emphasise the best way to improve standards is by supporting landlords through engagement, training, and grant funding opportunities’, it said.
