Rogue Landlord Lets Caretaker’s Storeroom

A London landlord has been ordered to stop letting out a caretaker’s storeroom with just one window as a one-bedroom flat.

Christian Podina has been told to stop renting out the property and that he must remove its kitchen and bathroom by May. The ‘flat’ in Rotherhithe fell far below the minimum 37m2 required for planning approval at just 27m2. Southwark Council employed planning enforcement laws against the landlord when it was discovered that the property was being used illegally.

Mr Podina has been issued with a 4-month timescale within which he must remove the kitchen and bathroom and stop using it as a residence. He may also be required to pay several thousand pounds of costs or face prosecution.

Cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, Councillor Mark Williams, said: ‘We are very aware that there is a housing crisis in London and we want to make sure there are homes being built across our borough, of all types. This does not mean we will allow unscrupulous landlords to make money by renting out unsuitable, cramped and uninhabitable premises wherever they see fit. This case shows we will take action against anyone who fails to meet our standards for decent, quality homes for our residents.’
